How Much Does a Custom Entertainment Center Cost in Houston?

If you're planning a custom entertainment center or media wall for your Houston home, cost is probably one of the first questions that comes to mind. We’ve all seen photos of so-called “easy” DIY media walls and magazine-worthy snaps of living room built-ins on our social media feeds. While these images can be great for inspiration, they rarely explain how much the design actually cost or what went into the process.

After more than 25 years of designing custom storage solutions, we’ve built a wide variety of custom entertainment centers and media walls across Greater Houston. From new builds in Fulshear and Bridgeland to historic homes in the Heights, we’ve worked with a variety of floor plans, room sizes, and decor styles.

In this article, we’ll discuss what goes into the price of a custom entertainment center, what a general range looks like, and the easiest way to get an accurate estimate for your home.

How much does a custom entertainment center cost in Houston?

On average, a fully custom entertainment center or media wall in the Greater Houston area generally ranges from $3,500 to $20,000 or more. That's a wide range on purpose, because "entertainment center" can mean anything from a simple built-in shelving unit around a wall-mounted TV to a floor-to-ceiling media wall with an electric fireplace, integrated lighting, and fully concealed wiring.

Think of that range as a starting point for the conversation, not a quote. The easiest way to receive an accurate estimate is to schedule a free in-home design consultation.

At your convenience, a designer will come to your home, measure the space, and discuss how you envision the room. From there, you'll receive a free custom 3D rendering of your reimagined space. There's no intense sales pitch or obligation to buy, just a conversation about what's possible with a custom design.

What's typically included at each price point?

Here's a general breakdown of what homeowners across the Houston area tend to see at different investment levels. Again, these are general averages, not concrete final pricing.

Tier

General Average Range

What's Usually Included

Simple built-in

$3,500 to $7,000

A single wall unit with shelving and cabinetry around an existing TV mount, minimal electrical work

Mid-range media wall

$7,000 to $13,000

Wider wall coverage, a mix of open shelving and closed storage, an electric fireplace, some cable concealment, upgraded finishes

Full custom media wall

$13,000 to $20,000+

Floor-to-ceiling design, premium materials, integrated lighting, fully hidden cable management, custom millwork details.

New builds in Cypress or The Woodlands sometimes have simpler wall configurations to design around. On the other hand, older homes in areas like Bellaire, West University, or Montrose sometimes require additional engineering to work with existing architecture, outlets, or HVAC returns.

What factors influence the cost of a custom media wall?

Across the custom home storage industry, a handful of factors consistently drive price up or down. Knowing them ahead of time helps you make smart decisions about where to splurge and where to simplify.

  • Size and wall coverage. A media wall spanning an entire living room costs more than a single accent unit around a TV, simply because of the materials and labor involved.

  • Material selection. Paint-grade MDF is more budget-friendly than real wood veneers or solid hardwood, and the difference shows up in both price and long-term durability.

  • Electric fireplace inclusion. Adding a fireplace means additional electrical work, ventilation considerations, and framing, which increases both material and labor costs.

  • Integrated lighting. LED accent lighting, puck lights inside shelving, or backlit panels all add to design complexity.

  • Cable and tech management. Fully hiding cords for a TV, soundbar, gaming console, or surround sound system takes extra planning and often in-wall conduit work.

  • Design complexity. Details like mitered corners, coffered ceilings that tie into the wall unit, floating shelves, or asymmetrical layouts require more design and fabrication time.

  • Installation complexity. Older homes often have uneven walls, unexpected framing, or existing electrical that needs to be worked around, which can sometimes add time on install day.

  • In-home design and engineering. A fully custom build means someone is designing specifically for your walls, ceiling height, and furniture layout, not pulling from a pre-fab warehouse.

Custom vs semi-custom vs big-box: why does the price vary so much?

Big-box or pre-fabricated entertainment centers are typically the least expensive option because they're mass-produced in standard sizes, shipped flat, and assembled on-site. They can work well if you’re renting, planning to move soon, or your space happens to match a standard size, and you're comfortable with limited material choices.

Semi-custom options land in the middle. You get some flexibility in size and finish, but the base structure is still built from a pre-existing system.

Fully custom media walls, which is where SpaceManager Closets focuses, are designed and manufactured specifically for your wall, your ceiling height, your outlets, and your vision. Because everything is built locally at our Houston showroom and manufacturing facility, located on W. Little York Rd., rather than ordered from a catalog or website, you get a piece that fits your space exactly and holds up over time, which is often why the investment lands higher than a big-box alternative.

Is a custom media wall worth the investment for a Houston home?

For many homeowners, the answer comes down to how much they use the space. If your living room or media room is where you actually spend your evenings, host friends, or watch every Astros and Texans game, a media wall built specifically for your TV size, your storage needs, and your style tends to earn its place quickly. It's also one of those upgrades that tends to stand out to future buyers if you ever sell, since it reads as a finished, intentional space rather than a piece of furniture that happened to end up there.

That said, this is a personal investment decision, and there's no wrong answer. Some homeowners want the full floor-to-ceiling statement wall, others want a clean, simple unit that hides the cords and holds the remote. Both are valid starting points for a design conversation.

How can I get an accurate cost estimate for my own home?

Now that you have a better idea of general price ranges for custom media walls and entertainment centers in Houston, including the factors that influence cost, it's time to see what a custom media wall would look like in your home.

Your next step: Schedule a free in-home design consultation.

This is the first step in our design process. During the design consultation, one of our friendly designers comes to your home, measures the space, talks through what you're picturing, and creates a custom 3D rendering, so you can fully envision the possibilities of personalized design.
